School of Life Science
1¡¢Overview
In order to meet the development of our social economy and higher education, School of Life Science and Technology was founded in 2002, and renamed as School of Life Science in 2008. The School has three departments, two institutes and one research center. They are Department of Bioengineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Pharmacy, Institute of Space Biology and Medical Engineering, Institute of Modern Biology and Medicine and Teaching Center of Biological Experiments. The slogan of the school culture is: Health, Happiness, Solidarity and Progress. The development strategy is “attracting the person with ability and optimizing the subjects to get progress, promoting development with passion and working hard to reach higher level”.
2¡¢Faculty
School of Life Science has 72 faculties. Among them, more than 80% have Ph.D degree. They are young, creative and active thinking. More than one-third of them have long term abroad experience on learning or working. A group of excellent experts and scientists arose up for their outstanding achievement, in detail involving 1 special-hiring academician, 1 professor supported by Yangtse Rive Scholar Bonus Schemes, 1 professor supported by the National New Century Bai-Qian-Wan Talents Engineering Program, 1 expert supported by “511 project”, 5 professors supported by Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University.
3¡¢Subject Disciplines
School takes the subject optimization as very important matter. The characters of the School are the combination of science and engineering, the combination of medicine and engineering, and the combination of modern medicine and traditional medicine. The key research fields are the biology science, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, and biomedicine. At present, there are three undergraduate programs, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology; there are five Master degree programs, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Medicine, Bioengineering and Life Information Engineering; there are three Ph.D programs, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering and Life Information Engineering. Meanwhile, there are two key national defense subject disciplines, Space Biology and Medical Engineering, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
4¡¢Achievements
a¡¢ Teaching and Talent Training
At present, there are 38 doctoral candidates, 173 postgraduates, 499 undergraduates and 5 foreign students. The student education is regarded as an important task. The school culture and innovation skill training are the key points of the education activities to perform a mature teaching system. Since 2006, over 50% of undergraduate students enroll to the graduate programs each year, and the employment rate is above 97%.
b¡¢ Scientific Research
Faculties of our school have undertaken many projects, such as the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), the National Natural Science Foundations of China (NSFC) and national, provincial and ministerial project of defense pre-research and civil aerospace. We established Demonstration Teaching Center of Biological Experiments in Beijing and Zhongguancun Biological Segregation Analysis Opening Laboratory. The total amount of research funding each year is more than £¤2,000,000. There are more than 120 published papers cited by SCI, EI and ISTP per year. We also established good collaborative relationships with many medical institutions and enterprises.
5¡¢ International Communication and Cooperation
The international communication and cooperation in our school has got remarkable achievements. We build long-term and stable relationships with many foreign universities, such as University of Saskatchewan (Canada), University of Bologna (Italy), Illinois Institute of Technology (USA) etc.. We also signed agreements of exchanging graduate students and scholars and cooperating in scientific research with many universities. In addition, our school carries out close technical cooperation with USA, Canada, Japan and other countries’ enterprises. We sponsored or hosted many large-scale international academic conferences. Furthermore, we invite many high qualified foreign professors whose background are in the research of space biology, neurobiology, biomedical engineering and biochemical engineering to visit us every year, and they have already played a significant part on improving the learning skill and opening the mind of students.
6¡¢Students program
In order to train students’ ability of practice and inspire innovative consciousness, promote the integrated quality, we carried out a variety of student programs with its own characteristics and received good results. Since 2004, our school hold ecological investigation as undergraduate's social practice every year, provide students an opportunity to aware the domestic and abroad ecological environments. The related research results have been published formally. Our school has won many encouragements on the science and technical innovation. The undergraduate students published some research articles based on their experiment results. On the other hand, we provide opportunities and platform to promote students comprehensive skill and improving the personal quality. Voluntary service and community activities are the good ways to realize the training goals.
