Program Description

Beijing Institute of Technology is hosting a special summer program in manufacturing for international students in MMAE and
INTM.In this program, students will work with their Chinese counterparts to gain hands-on experience in the manufacturing process. In addition, international students will be able to learn more about Chinese culture through various tours and visits.

Syllabus of BIT 2013 Summer Program
Summer 2013

1 Course Description

This course provides students different level of engineering training. The main feature is the practical training of basic engineering skills. The main objectives involve to familiarize students with modern mechanical manufacturing principles, methods, equipments and skills. Through a series of practical trainings, students will study the main methods of material forming and mechanical manufacturing, get basic practical operation skills and improve their engineering practical ability, also to provide students with a practical understanding of the principles of kinematics, with the combination of principles and actual machine behaviors, and with the methods for the kinematical design of machines and machinery systems. Based on the systematic concept students will have clear understanding of human factors, especially individual difference and the relationship between human and machine, which are the fundamental of engineering design

The course tasks are as follows:
 (1) Familiar with the general procedure of mechanical manufacturing, common manufacturing process and the principles of the main equipments, typical mechanism and the usage of the cutters and tools.
 (2) Learn the general manufacturing process knowledge and the usage of some new mechanical techniques, methods and equipments.
 (3) Together with the basic knowledge learning and practical skill training, students’ ability in production management, marketing, quality control, innovation and the theory-practice integration will be improved.
 (4) Being able to choose appropriate manufacturing method for simple parts, use the correct equipments to produce it and do the manufacturing process analysis.
 (5) Get the knowledge of human factors in the production and the interaction between human and the environments, common operation safety and environment protection.
(6)Improve student’s practice ability, especially creative ability as well as enlarge engineering knowledge.

2. Prerequisites

Students are recommended to have engineering background or have fundamental knowledge of engineering drawing, mechanical design, or manufacturing process.

3. Course Content

  (1) The introduction to lathe, which includes the components, the fixtures and the tools using in lathe, as well as the machining process by lathe.
  (2) The introduction to fundamentals of turning operation, selection of cutting parameters.
  (3) Turning machine training which includes basic operating and typical surface machining methods practice.
  (4) The introduction to milling machine, which includes the components, the fixtures and the tools using in milling machine and cutting process.
  (5) The introduction to fundamentals of milling operation, selection of cutting parameters.
  (6) Milling machine training which includes basic operating and typical surface machining methods, such as plane, step and groove.
  (7) The fundamental knowledge and training of fitter operation.
Based on all above, student should produce a hammer.

Part Two  Human Factors experiment

        (1) The introduction to human factors
        (2) More than 30 experiments on human aesthesis, perception, capabilities and limitations, which include visual ability, hearing sense, tactile sense, reaction time, movement time, flexible of finger, test of color vision and so on.
        (3) Based on these experiments, student should submit data analysis report and a thesis on human factors.

Part Three  Mechanism  Design practice
  (1) Practice of planar mechanisms creative design. Taking linkage as an example, by means of many multiple function elements, students design mechanism first, select elements, components, then assemble a model, continually modify the size, the connection, the layout, also to change different parameters in order to get the best design.
  (2) Practice of electromechanical device creative design. By means of “Fischertechnik”, which includes many parts with different pattern, dimension. It covers almost all kinds of parts in daily life or mechanism. Students design mechanism, devices and equipments by assembling parts or changing their connection.
     (3) Both 1) and 2) are team work.
In addition to above contents, this program also provide some activities such as Chinese Learning, Chinese culture exchange and touring in Beijing .
