School of Automation has now about 120 staffs, including 25 professors and 34 associate professors. The teachers with Ph.D degree account for 70% of the total ones, including one academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, one Yangtze River Scholar and Distinguished Professor, one teacher with National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, three teachers with Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University of China, two teachers with Millions of Talents Project in the New Century by National Ministry of Personnel, two middle-aged and young experts with outstanding contributions to Technology and Industry for National Defence, two distinguished teachers of Beijing. School of Automation has a team supported by Program for Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team in University in 2009.

School of Automation has now about 1000 undergraduates, over 300 graduates and nearly 200 PhD candidates. Every year School of Automation takes over 50 national scientific research projects, including “973”, “863”, National Nature Science Foundation of China, Science and Technology Development, National Defence Pre-research, National Defence Foundation, High-tech Project and Model Development etc. Besides, every year the school accesses to about 80 million research funding, publishes over 200 papers, applies for over 15 invention patents. In the last three years the school has got three National Progress Awards, 17 Provincial awards and published 10 books and teaching materials (including two English monographs). The Post-doctoral research station of “Control Science and Engineering” was established in 1998, and was entitled to be first-level discipline authorized to offer doctorate degree. The second-level disciplines belonging to the first-level discipline are Control Science and Control Engineering, Navigation Guidance and Control, Pattern Recognition and Intelligent System, Systems Engineering, and Detection Technology and Automatic Equipment. “Control Science and Control Engineering” was honored with National Key Disciplines in 2001. “Pattern Recognition and Intellectual Control” was honored with State Commission of Science and Technology for National Defense Industry Key Disciplines in 2002. “Control Science and Control Engineering” was honored with National Key Disciplines again, and “Navigation Guidance and Control” was honored with National Key Cultivating Disciplines in 2007. “Control Science and Engineering” was honored with Key First- Level Disciplines of Beijing in 2008, and was among the top ten in National discipline assessment in 2002 and 2006.

School of Automation has two majors for bachelor, “Electrical Engineering and Automation” and “Automation” which is a famous major of university, and they are cooperation partner to establish the National Electrical and Electronic Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. In term of laboratory construction, School of Automation currently has some high-level labs, including “Automatic control system” which is the Key Lab of Beijing, “Intelligent control and decision of complex system” which is the Key Lab of ministry of education, “Navigation Guidance and Control” which is the Engineering Centre of ministry of education and the Base of State Key Laboratory Cultivation.School of Automation has developed friendly cooperation with over ten universities, research institutes and enterprises of American, Germany, Japan, England, Russia, Australia, and Pakistan etc in academic exchange, personnel training, scientific research and so on.In recent years, School of Automation has undertaken the second and the third stage of “Project 211”, the first, the second, and the third stage of  “Project 985”. The scientific environment, experimental conditions, quality of personnel training and academic level have been significant improved.

  • A brief history
The predecessor of School of Automation in BIT is department of automatic control which was established in 1960. The relevant major was first opened in 1953 and BIT is the pioneer of automatic control teaching and research in the Chinese society, which has developed for more than half a century.I

In the initial stage after the foundation of department of automatic control, the teaching and scientific research was mainly in military service. By studying the military products such as artillery and radar, the majors such as Command Instruments, Servo Systems and Large Scale Systems was developed, besides the research directions included Servo Systems, Hydraulic Transmission and Gyroscope. The Command Instrument major was one of the cradles of the research of computer science and was then developed into the major of Computer Application which was the predecessor of School of Computer Science. Since university entrance examinations were held again, three majors for undergraduates was opened, including Automatic Control Theory, Industrial Automation and Hydraulic Transmission and Control. In 1998, according to the regulations of Education Ministry, the three majors for undergraduates were merged into one–Automation. In 2002, another major – Electrical Engineering and Automation was opened.

In order to adapt to the reform and opening up and the development of the market economy, department of automatic control made some changes in research direction and personal training mode, including transition from military to civilian, products to subject and engineering research to combination of science and engineering. In 1999, the Ph.D Program of first-level discipline in control science and engineering was authorized, and the situation of only one doctoral program existing lasted for over 20 years was ended. After that, 5 Ph.D Program of second-level disciplines—including Control Theory and Control Engineering, Navigation Guidance and Control, Pattern Recognition and Intellectual Control, Systems and Engineering, and Detection Technology and Automatic Equipment, and 1 Post-Doctoral Research Station was established.

Looking back the history, School of Automation went through a long progress of twists and turns but continuous development. No matter in initial stage of a military age or in the adversity of the Great Cultural Revolution, all the students and teachers of School of Automation shared weal and woe with our motherland loyally and voluntarily. School of Automation has made outstanding contribution in personal training and has fostered ten thousand talents with high qualities, including Qinghong Zeng--the leader of the country and the party, Yan Hao--a vice admiral of People's Liberation Army, Xuekun Shang--a rear admiral of People's Liberation Army etc, who has made a great contribution to science and technology, economic construction and defense modernization of China.
