The computer major in BIT was first established in 1958 as one of the first in China. In 1980, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering was formally formed. In 2009, it is restructured into School of Computer Science. In the past five decades, the School has made prominent contributions to the development of teaching, research and industry in computer science and technology in China.
 
Located on Zhong Guan Cun Campus of BIT, which is next to silicon valley of China, the School enjoys the vibrant, aspiring, and exciting atmosphere for the profession of information technology. With well experienced and dedicated faculty members, as well as state-of-the-art facilities, the school is undertaking cutting-edge research to innovate viable technologies and solutions for a wide variety of domains.
 
The school has established broad connections and collaborations with renowned organizations, institutions, and companies, both locally and internationally, providing richer opportunities for the staff and students to further strengthen teaching and research advancement.
  • Mission and Vision
The mission of the School is taking the fundamental challenges from the demands of society on information technology, cultivating outstanding innovative talents with global vision to identify and solve emerging problems of the future, and achieving cutting-edge research and engineering innovation at the highest international levels of excellence.
 
The vision is to be national leader in computer science and engineering with a balanced theoretic, applied, industry and education impact, and to be recognized internationally for our areas of research strength and expertise.
 
              
  • Staff and Students
The School is made up of 98 faculty staff, 7 post-doctoral researchers, and 13 administrative and non-faculty staff. About one third staff have oversea experiences. For their excellent work, school members have won many National and Provincial/Ministry awards:
1 National Outstanding Teaching Team
1 Beijing distinguished teaching award 
5 New Century Excellent Talents in University by Ministry of Education
 
Besides, the school has 12 honorable professors invited domestically or internationally, including Deyi Li, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
 
Currently, there are 726 undergraduate students, 450 master's candidates, and 226 doctorate candidates enrolled for on-campus study. Besides, there are 45 international students. 
 
  • Laboratories and Facilities
The School is currently organized into 4 divisions:

Computer Application Technology, and
Computer Fundamental Teaching
 
Moreover, there are 3 Beijing municipal and 3 university key laboratories and centers supporting school-wide activities of research and teaching.

  • Research
The school is deeply engaged in research of national and international standing in many areas, including but not only:
 
1. Software theory and engineering
Theoretical computing, complex information system, cooperation of heterogeneous systems, knowledge-based management for large volume data.
 
2. Language information processing and knowledge engineering
Machine translation, natural language processing, information classification and retrieval, semantic computing, automatic answering, knowledge management, machine learning, data mining, and intelligence-aided decision.
 
3. Network and computer security
Distributed systems, intelligent autonomous systems, information security, cloud computing, sensor networks, Internet of things, web mining, semantic web and web services, and relay network.
 
4.High-performance embedded computing
Architecture of high-performance embedded processors, object-oriented multi-core embedded processors.
 
5. Intelligent sensing and media computing
Computer vision, computer graphics, pattern recognition, image and video analysis, image retrieval, and human-machine interaction.
 
6. Virtual reality and simulation
Virtual reality, reality enforcement, reality modeling and simulation, visualized system, social computing, and simulation of complex system.
 
  • Courses and Programs
The School offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs on computer related disciplines. All postgraduate subjects are taught bilingually as supported by the university.
 
The School provides Computer Science and Technology program covering all levels of study for undergraduate, master, and doctorate students. The School also provides Engineering of the Internet of Things program for undergraduate study. Moreover, the School has two inter- disciplinary master programs including Biomedical Engineering and Library and Information Science.
 
In addition, the school has four State key disciplines:

National Defense Key Discipline of Computer Software Theory
National Defense Key Interdiscipline of Aerospace Medicine and Biomedical Engineering
Beijing Key Interdiscipline of Digital Acting and Simulation Technology
 

  • Awards and Achievements
In the past three years, the school has undertaken up to 150 research projects, including 24 from National Natural Science Foundation, and over 30 from National “863” Plan and National Defense Foundation.
 
The faculty has published more than 600 influential academic papers, 560 of them are indexed by EI/SCI/ISTP. There are 14 national patents has been issued, as another 36 are in application.
 
The faculty has won 8 National and Provincial/Ministry Science and Technology awards.
 
For the teaching, 2 Provincial/Ministry teaching awards were granted. In addition, 2 national excellent courses, 2 national bilingual demonstration courses, and 2 Provincial/Ministry excellent courses were recognized.
 
  • International Collaborations
The School has extensive collaborations with world renowned universities and institutions through joint research and training projects, information sharing, mutual visit and students exchange programs.
1. Annually, more than 10 world renowned scholars are invited for presentations and short courses.
2. In the past three years, more than 30 staff and 10 joint training doctoral students have benefited from international exchange programs. 
3. The school has attracted over 120 international students, covering undergraduate, master, and doctorate study.
 
The school has jointly established 3 research centers. 
1. BIT-DFKI Joint Lab of Language Information Processing, with German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence.
2. The Joint Research Center For Neural Informatics, with Department of Linguistics State Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, University of Hong Kong 
3. Xilinx-BIT High Performance Networking Lab, with Xilinx, Inc.
 
The School also has close collaboration with renowned IT companies and research institutions, domestically and internationally, including Microsoft, IBM, Intel, and SAP.
