The School of Chemistry of Beijing Institute of Technology(BIT) is a renowned chemical school in China, with its comprehensive strength and international influence at the top of domestic schools and some of its researches at the international leading edge; in 2011£¬the school ranked No.452 among the 1,034 international institutions and No.26 among the 66 domestic schools listed in ESI International Academic Evaluation TOP 1%. It is a major contributor in producing domestic and international chemical professionals and an important base for scientific research.

The predecessor of the School of Chemistry was founded by Beijing Sino-French University and North China Institute of Technology in the 1950s; in 2002, it was included into the School of Science from its former place in the School of Chemical Engineering and Materials; in June of 2011, the School of Chemistry was built on the Chemistry Department of the School of Science, with subordinate departments of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and physical chemistry. The school has a staff of 52 people with over 90 % having doctorate degrees. There are 18 professors, 30 doctoral advisors (12 part-time ones), 1 dual-employed academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 distinguished professors of the Cheung Kong Scholars Program, 1 winner of the National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, 1 member in the Young Scholars Plan of the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 1 member in the Short-term Plan of the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 3 New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education, and 1 Beijing Excellent Teacher.

The school offers undergraduate programs on Pure Chemistry and Applied Chemistry, and Master’s, Doctoral and Post-Doctoral programs on first-level chemical disciplines; there are over 200 undergraduates and 257 master and doctoral candidates. With the focus on students' mind and active exploration of innovative training patterns, the school is striving to produce creative talents with ambitious goals, solid theoretical knowledge and practical abilities. Among its graduates, there is one nominee of the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award, one winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, winners of various prizes in the Beijing Chemistry Experiment Contest, and winners of the National Scholarship, National Motivational Scholarships, Chinese Academy of Sciences Scholarship, Xu Teli Scholarship, SMC Scholarship, the Youbo Fund and many other social scholarships. The school has produced 308 Bachelors, 419 Masters, 115 Doctors, 11 Post Doctors, contributing to the talents structure of government agencies, research institutes and industrial enterprises.

As BIT attaches great importance to science and implements the Science Promotion Plan, the School of Chemistry has been given over 30 million yuan from the funds of Project 211 and Project 985 to build a world-class platform for talents training and scientific research. Now it has established Ministerial Key Disciplines of Physical Chemistry, the Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education for Atomic and Molecular Clusters, the Nanoscale Science and Technology Base of the “111 Project” initiated by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and the Ministry of Education, and the Beijing Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Basic Chemistry, and has participated in building the State Key Laboratory of Explosion Science and Technology, thus playing an essential role in innovative talents training, scientific research and social services for the nation.

Closely following the latest progress in the international community and the demands of the national defense, and further integrating science with engineering, the main disciplines of the School of Chemistry are Inorganic Synthesis and Advanced Materials, Nanomaterials Molecular Design and Structural Control, Functional Organic Molecules Design, Synthesis and Performance, Chromatographic and Spectral Analysis and Chemical and Biological Sensing, Theoretical Design of Chemical Microscopic Processes and Bio-functional Molecules, and Electrochemisty and Green Catalytic Chemistry. These disciplines not only cover the major areas of modern chemistry, but also reflect the latest needs in materials, energy, environment and defense for China in the 21st century. Among them, the researches in Polyoxometalate Chemistry, Nanomaterials Chemistry, Energetic Molecules Design and Preparation, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, and Spectroscopy have reached the international top level with their own distinct advantages.

Over the past three years, the School of Chemistry has been in charge of 45 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (an average of over one project for each teacher), and 17 national and provincial projects of the 973 Program£¬ the 863 Program, the National Key Technology R&D Program and the Defense Basic Research, with total funds of more than 2900 million yuan. During the recent five years, the teachers here have made significant academic achievements: over 400 SCI papers have been published, among which over 150 papers were published in J. Am Chem Soc, ADV. Mater., ACS Nano and other high-level academic journals; there were over 20 national invention patent applications and patent grants; there was one first prize and one second prize of the Natural Science Award for Colleges issued by the Ministry of Education.

The School of Chemistry highly values the internationalization of higher education, and carries out a wide range of substantive academic exchanges and cooperation with the universities and research institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and Austria, which have enhanced the quality of talents training and the level of scientific research; dozens of people attend overseas academic conferences and research programs every year; many doctoral candidates are supported by the China Scholarship Council to study in prestigious overseas universities, and many undergraduates attend international exchange programs. Under the Undergraduate Joint Training Program between Beijing Institute of Technology and University of Waterloo in Canada, sophomores in the School of Chemistry can apply for the dual degree program and the admitted students will continue their third and fourth year study at the University of Waterloo. This program enables the students to receive bachelor's degrees from both BIT and the University of Waterloo.
